Elephants Coming through the Garden | Olifants River, Greater Kruger National Park #southafrica
asimplyfab.life Elephants take over the garden, grazing right up the houses, seemingly unconcerned about the presence of humans in close proximity. The elephants make their way along the river, grazing as they go, and cross over before exploring up close, walking right past us, invading the garden, and grazing along the river.
We spent a truly special couple of days in the Greater Kruger Park area alongside the Olifants River. This area of South Africa is a fantastic place to experience wildlife at its best!
This area, somewhere south of Phalaborwa, has plenty of trees and shade, and the proximity to the river just adds a bit more charm. Very quiet and calm where you just sit back and allow the wildlife to stroll over and say hi. Great for birdlife as well, this just shows Kruger Park's value for the safari enthusiast.

    We were there in May and stayed in Camp site 3 right across from where you stayed, and that big male walked back and forth to the septic system all day and night. Quite as a mouse. Startled me several times by coming up behind me within 10 feet or so. Nxai pans water holes were always something. So much wildlife all taking their time. We also did Elephant sands and there was several dozen in the waterhole at any given time.

    Here in UK we can buy the replacement channel to replace that bottom section of the doors and weld in the new steel to the frame after cutting out the corroded section. This summer I have both my door bottoms to do. There still needs to be some glue or sealant between the frame and the aluminium skin to stop the electrolytic corrosion, but a good repair should be good for 20 years when done properly and treated with internal wax or corrosion inhibiter. It is cheaper to do that than buy replacement doors which may have corrosion started already. New doors are very expensive.

      Great vid. How'd you get your drone into Botswana? My friend is trying to get a permit, but there's no response from from the authorities.

    • @ASimplyFabLife
      @ASimplyFabLife 10 днів тому

      Thanks for the comment. I'm afraid I can't help with an answer. Why they haven't responded, I don't know, sometimes things take a little longer in Africa, part of the charm. Perhaps ask the question on Drivebots (FB), they're very good). I CAN tell you what happened though: Tbh I had forgotten it was in my bag (it's a small one), and in the wider picture we had a week before and a week after the Botswana tour, visiting in South Africa and the drone was for that part of the trip. I wasn't even aware of the drone permits (it is not that widely publicised). I DID become aware of it at the National Parks ("no drones" signs everywhere at the entrance gates). I respect the rules completely and the drone did not come out of its case (or my bag) anywhere in Botswana. Except for this one spot. Since it was extremely remote, with no wildlife, there's nothing there and no people around. So I made a judgement call. Drones can be a hazard and a nuisance for the wildlife, in my opinion. Something (anything - crashing, losing it, injury) could happen and then you have a problem. It also changes their behaviour with one of these buzzing, zooming little things flying around their terrain, something they aren't used to, and it should stay that way. I totally get that. And I get that we are SUPER privileged to be able to visit these environments in this manner, and I respect the rules and regulations that are in place (unlike some people - see my Chobe cheetahs video). I also understand that the Bots government cannot trust everyone on their word, and need to issue permits. The only other aerial observation we did do, was through Helicopter Horizon's Okavango Helicopter Flight (great trip and I'm pretty sure they have a permit😅). I can add that I am one of those guys who will just shrug and move on if (or when) something (I am not particularly attached to) is confiscated. Having grown up in South Africa we (have) deal(t) with quite a lot of "unofficial" flexing of authority (at roadblocks etc.). So we tend to take it as it comes (if that helps)... Sorry for the long reply😅😉🙄

    Did this route SOLO last year in August 2023. The campsite had just been destroyed by the elephants when I got there. Green fresh leaves all over. Great to see it recovered. Those are hard going roads. Broke a mirror on that Bape / Xaxa road. The X is a click on the roof of your mouth. Imagine a bushman sound. FYI as I understand it yes the CKGR local people prefer to be called Bushmen and not Khoisan. Lethiahua is a massive push for one day - 9hours on Tracks for Africa with no stops 😱. Took me all day from Piper to Xaxa. Going to have to watch the next one to see how that worked out😀. CKGR is epic. Busy slowly uploading my trip to UA-cam as well. PS Subscribed🤙

      Fantastic place. I was happy just trawling through the bush, miles from anywhere. Endless tracks, heat, dust, isolation... Solo is pretty ballsy - although you DO have a Troopy, which is quite a bit more capable than the Hiluxes. Yes, Letiahau was ambitious from Xaxa (180 k's or so). A test of stamina😅🥵. At Xade gate we had a group vote and the rookies were happy to find civilisation again - can't blame them in the conditions as first-timers. Have to go back now!😊 Happy with our route though (an extra jerrycan would have made all the difference) and can now tick off a section of the Kalahari. Gotta say though, Xaxa is quite an amazing spot for a piece of dirt in the middle of nowhere! Cheers for the comment (subbed back - will check out Bots Solo Ep1🤙) Keep rollin' out there!

    asimplyfab.life/book-life-is-better-in-flip-flops/ This repair/replacement is way less daunting than you might think. It is all fairly simple to do with basic tools, even on your lawn or driveway, and should take around two hours (including wielding a camera to try and catch the angles!)

    Great idea to put the griddle plate on the hob to diffuse the heat for cooking food that needs to simmer on a low heat for a longer period of time. Thank you for sharing your experience. 😊

    Great info - what is your take on the best time of the year to visit Botswana for a self drive? I'm thinking mid/late October - nice and warm, but before the rains start

    • @ASimplyFabLife
      @ASimplyFabLife 21 день тому

      End of October is a pretty good shout. As a comparison, we went in March which was extremely hot with the heat wave, but low season, super dry, and the campsites were quite empty. We also did a solo week at end of November/December as the rains were starting to pull in - with a number of camps where we were the only ones😊🤘, and we got through Makgadigadi okay at the time (about two inches of mud). When ae were there a few months ago Botswana was still experiencing a heavy drough, so depending on the region you're looking at and if you have a group or solo I would look at October / November timeline👍 Check the booking availability though🤔. Also if it is low- or mid-season, prices can change a lot!

    Very interesting video. Thank you. One question: I’d like to know your opinion: if you were a tourist from abroad on a first trip to Botswana would you go to Maun and the Moremi area or would you go to Kasane and the Chobe area? Greetings from Brazil

    • @ASimplyFabLife
      @ASimplyFabLife 21 день тому

      Thanks for your comment. I enjoyed making this one, Botswana is just such a great place! This is the impossible question! Opinions and preferences are all over the place. I asked Victoria and she answered with Kasane/Chobe, for me it is probably Maun area, but we have different tastes. Some points to think about and what you prefer: Kasane (as mentioned in the video) is a mini version of Maun, but the Chobe river makes for awesome game viewing (on a guided tour or yourself). Victoria Falls is just a short drive away (as a day tour), helicopter flights (like Maun), river cruises, guided town tours, great lodges and a very chilled vibe at the river. Namibia border is just there, and there are various excursions to Zambia and Zimbabwe. However, Okavango (where Maun is the gateway) is considered to be the epicentre of Botswana. For me, the appeal is abundant waterways, animals, diverse areas like savanna, forest, and wetland to discover. It has a bit more 'safari' feel to me, and you can go on a mokoro (which you can't in Kasane), or head to Makgadigadi just a few hours away (a totally different vibe). You also have Khwai area nearby, which is fantastic. Depending on your timeline I would recommend half/half: if you have a week, maybe three or four days in each region, and drive through Chobe from Maun to Kasane. I am not sure this helps you a lot, but I enjoy both areas. An idea is to go onto facebook and ask this question on: Drivebots group. You will get some good, varying opinions and it can help to give you an idea on your route. The best is that is doesn't really matter which area you choose. Both are an amazing snapshot of Botswana and you will experience all the game viewing, safari tours, and local vibe you are looking for. Get out there and discover! Thanks for watching, great to hear some feedback🙏😊
